482 visa now New Skills In Demand (SID) as of 7 Dec 2024

The 482 temporary skill shortage visa has been changed to the Skills in demand visa as of 7 Dec 2025.

Some of the key changes are:

New skilled occupation list (core skills occupation list)
Work must be considered full time and you are to be paid over $73,150 as the threshold.
Processing times will drop (currently at 6-9 months minimum)
For eligibility if your occupation is not on the core skills list there is a new stream for specialised skills stream which means you can be eligible and revert to the ANZSCO 2022 as reference to occupations eligible. You must also be paid over $135,000 per year to be eligible for this stream. Note: there is also caveats for certain occupations. Note those in the trades will not be eligible for specialised skills stream.
Note also that the assessments will be tougher on businesses and applicants as the work experience threshold is now lower.
Only require minimum one year work experience to be eligible for this visa. Note that there is reference to ANZSCO if a qualification must also exist for that role. This must be assessed as the requirement vary each occupation and there is many different issues that can come up such as your qualification is not recognised at the appropriate level in Australia etc.

For those wanting to obtain permanent residency, it is still the same as the Dec 2023 changes where workers on existing 482 visas can move to permanent residency after two years as long as they don't switch employers if their occupation is now off the list as this could result in issues. This is a technical aspect of immigration which you will need a specific consultation for.

Note also that this is not migration advice per se as each role is different and each qualification is different.
